A single-speed pump running 8 hours a day in Central Florida eats about $1,200 of electricity a year. A properly tuned variable-speed pad runs 20–24 hours a day and costs $280. Here are the five upgrades that most of our retirees in The Villages and Ocala ask us to install together.
1. Variable-speed pump
A high-efficiency VS pump replaces your old single-speed in a half-day. Energy savings: 50–70%. Our favorite units in 2026: the Jandy ePump 2.7 and Pentair IntelliFlo3.
2. Salt chlorination with automation
A salt cell generates chlorine on demand and cuts the chemical budget by about 80%. Pair with an automation panel (Jandy iAquaLink or Pentair IntelliCenter) and you set schedules from your phone.
3. LED pool and spa lights
A single 300-watt incandescent bulb pulls 300W whenever on. Modern LED units deliver more light at 30W and last 30,000 hours. Return on investment: under 18 months.
4. Smart heater sizing + solar hybrid
If you heat your pool, size the heater to the spa only. For the pool, pair solar roof panels with a small gas or heat-pump assist to extend swim season into November without running a 400,000-BTU heater all day.
5. Thermal cover for the spa
A 2-inch insulated spa cover cuts standby heat loss by about 70%. Combined with the right automation schedule, you can keep your spa 100°F year-round for roughly $18 a month.
Example: 2026 Villages retrofit numbers
A Villages homeowner in Lake Deaton did all five upgrades last August: VS pump, salt + automation, LED, LED spa + cover, and a solar/gas hybrid heater. His previous 12-month pool-related electric was $1,480. Last 12 months, same pool: $560. That is a 62% drop.
